One major upgrade is the ability to hop off your board and explore the levels on foot, a first in the series. However this wasn't enough of a change, as the gameplay would otherwise remain the same. The gamer now had to create a character to call their own and go through things that real skaters did on their way up the ranks. Using the history and experiences of the pro skaters in the game, a storyline was built around YOU. ![]() They designed a game that lets the player become more involved in WHY they're skating all over the world doing all these inane acts. The basic ideas of THUG were drawn up with this in mind. Simply collecting S-K-A-T-E letters over and over wasn't nearly as compelling. With the popularity of the Grand Theft Auto series, many gamers were looking for a more immersive storyline with more freedom. The first thing to go was the Pro Skater title. So when Tony Hawk's Underground, AKA THUG, was in development, the team had to look long and hard at the series. You could do virtually everything you wanted to and more in the series. 99% of the complaints and requests from the millions of gamers worldwide were addressed. Manuals, Reverts and Spine transfers each revolutionized the way the series was played. After the release of THPS 4, it was hard to fathom what more Neversoft could do to the series.
